Grok API — models, pricing and limits
The Grok API prices and rate limits change without announcements, so this page keeps the current numbers for every model alongside the dated record of what they were before.
What models does the Grok API offer?
The API serves the current Grok model family. Each version we track has a dated release page carrying its model id, context window and modalities, taken from the vendor's own release notes rather than restated here as a permanent fact.
- 500k tokens · 12 August 2026 · Grok 4.6 raised the context window to 500k tokens.
What does the Grok API cost?
The API is billed per million tokens, with separate input, cached input and output rates, and Grok 4.6 introduced a two-tier structure that switches at a 200k-token prompt. Every rate below carries the date it took effect and the source it came from.
The rates arrive with the release that introduced them — Grok 4.6 is the current one — and consumer subscriptions are metered differently, on the plan limits page.
- 12 August 2026PriceDocumented
Grok 4.5 pricing → $2 in / $0.50 cached / $6 out per 1M under 200k prompt; $4 / $1 / $12 above USD / 1M tokens
Grok 4.6 launched with a two-tier price structure that switches at a 200k-token prompt.
What are the Grok API rate limits?
Rate limits are per-minute request and token ceilings applied to your account, separate from the consumer plans and their rolling windows. They are set per account, so the authoritative figures are the ones in your own console; changes we can date are recorded below.
A rate limit is not an outage: if calls start failing across an entire region, the API status page is where that shows up.

How do I get a Grok API key?
API keys are issued in the vendor's own developer console, not by us. We track what a key costs to use and what changed, not the sign-up flow.
The console and the developer documentation are the vendor's own: docs.x.ai. We are an independent register and issue nothing.
Last dated API change: November 2, 2026. Every figure on this page carries the date it took effect and the source it came from.
