Grok model versions — Grok 2 to Grok 4.6
Grok 4 is not one model: this page lists every Grok version from Grok 2 onwards with its release date, context window and price, so you can see what changed between them and which one you are actually using. Every figure carries a source and a date, and a field with no documented value stays blank rather than inheriting the previous version's number.

Price basis is marked per row, not per page: 8 of 15 rows carry prices taken from the vendor's own documentation, and the rest are figures reported by third parties — a reported price is an indication, not a rate card.

What is the difference between Grok 4 and Grok 4.6?
Grok 4.6 is the current model: 500k tokens of context, trained to February 1, 2026, with reasoning effort at low, medium, high, xhigh. Grok 4 shipped on July 9, 2025 with 256k tokens of context at $3 in and $15 out per million tokens, but those figures come from third-party trackers rather than the vendor's own documentation, so the comparison is sound on direction and soft on decimals.
Which Grok version has the largest context window?
The largest context window is not in the flagship. It is in Grok 4 Fast at 2M tokens — 4 times the 500k of Grok 4.6, at roughly a 10th of the input price ($0.20 against $2 per million tokens). An older, cheaper model holds the longest context on the list, so if a single long document or conversation is what limits you, the newest model is the wrong default. No vendor publishes this comparison, because no vendor page puts its own versions side by side. The figures for the older versions are third-party reported and marked as such in the row.
Which Grok version am I using?
In the API you are using exactly the model id you send in the request — the ids are in the table above, and the pricing that applies is the row under that id. In the apps you do not choose a version number: Grok on the web, in the mobile apps and inside X runs whatever SpaceXAI has rolled out to your plan, and the rollout is not announced per surface. If the behaviour changed and you want to know whether something moved, the dated quota history is where we record it, and the API page holds the current model and price figures.
What was new in Grok 4?
Vendor-reported benchmarks: HLE 50.7% and AIME 100% for the Heavy variant, which requires SuperGrok Heavy at $300/month. Reported by third parties, not verified against vendor docs. The figures we hold for Grok 4 come from price trackers rather than vendor documentation, so the row is marked reported and the fields we cannot cite stay empty — that is the accurate state of our record, not a placeholder. When is Grok 5 coming?
There is no Grok 5. No release date has been documented, no model id exists in the API, and nothing appears in the official release notes, so there is no row for it above and we will not create one from speculation.
